bplant.org Financial Statement: 2024

Show Year: 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024

Income / Revenue

In 2024 we raised a total of $5,916.30 through donations. This reprsents growth of +34% from last year, which, adjusting for inflation, is roughly equivalent to +31%.

Our donation total represents $500 in check donations and $5,597 in online donations, minus $181.50 in payment processing fees and adjustments (a rate of about 3.24%) This rate is down slightly from last year as a result of people donating in larger amounts, which minimizes processing fees, so thank you! These donations include 58 named donors through our direct donation system, 1 check donor, 3 donors through other online payment methods, and 2 anonymous donors through Liberapay. The Liberapay donations raised $59.40, a figure which is included in our previously given totals since Liberapay donations are also processed through Stripe. Assuming the anonymous donors do not overlap, we had 64 donors, an increase of 12 (+23%) over last year.

We continued to see an increase in subscribing donors; we now have 16 active subscriptions through our on-site donation button, and 2 additional through Liberapay. This is a big increase from last year. As in the previous year, many returning donors increased their donations, and many of the subscriptions were from former one-time donors.

While this is fantastic news, we remind you that we are still a long way from paying a single full-time living wage, and even farther from being able to build a larger team to expand what the site can do. bplant.org has no sources of revenue or financial support other than those summarized on this page, and has been constructed and maintained primarily as a volunteer effort, which Alex accomplishes by living frugally and using income from other sources. We would really like to be able to pay a living wage for at least one, ideally multiple people on a staff.

Expenditures

bplant.org's expenses remain low, relying on the infrastructure for the other websites run by Merit Exchange LLC, including RateTea, 31et.com, and several others. However, our costs continue to increase due to inflation, and as bplant.org grows, the portion of total infrastructure usage by this website continues to grow.

The only dedicated cost specific to bplant.org is $26.13 for our domain registrar and cloud host provider. We also gave $144 to iNaturalist, which we heavily rely on for multiple purposes, including as a source of open-licensed images, a tool to research plant distribution, and for its social and community features to converse about plant ID, range, and other aspects of ecology.

All remaining funds currently go to compensate Alex Zorach for their work on the site.

Thank you!

Thank you to all donors who supported us in 2024 and prior years! We hope to keep up the great momentum going into 2025.
