Bald Brome (Bromus racemosus L.)

Also known as smooth brome; also classified as BONAP and USDA PLANTS both consider meadow brome (Bromus commutatus) to be part of this species. We follow the convention of other authorities, including FNA and POWO, which treat it as separate.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This map is loosely derived from the USDA PLANTS and BONAP maps for this species, but as both of these sources fail to distinguish between this and meadow brome (Bromus commutatus), it is possible that some of the records on this map are actually of that species. However, because that species is generally agreed to be relatively rare and not as widespread in North America, it is also possible that our map is fully accurate. We have not yet reviewed it and it will likely be a low priority for us because it will be a massive undertaking to do so given how few sources have continent-wide data that distinguishes these two species, so it will necessitate looking at individual records.
