Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is widely planted, but has weedy tendencies, spreading through its seed sticking to animal fur. It has escaped cultivation continent-wide. Although it consists mostly of scattered, isolated populations, on a larger scale it has established so consistently across the continent, in many different ecoregions, that we chose to mark it as expanded everywhere. It is likely that it will continue to expand. The exact extent of the native range is not known; we used BONAP's distinction between Native and Adventive as a starting point.
