Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
The exact native range of this species is not known, but it is generally agreed-upon to be native to Mexico but not the US, and to have expanded northward. Although it is sometimes cultivated and escapes cultivation, it also spreads along roadsides. We mark all US populations as Expanded because there is a clear pattern of expansion adjacent to the native range with the plant becoming progressively less common northward. We have yet to build the portion of its map in Mexico.
