This species is widely agreed to be native to the central to interior southwestern US and Mexico. We mark the California population Introduced because it is isolated from the native range by long distances and geographic divides. We mark the eastern range Expanded because it is mostly contiguous with the native range and, at the easternmost edges, separated by much shorter distances and fewer geographic divides.
