This species is generally agreed to be native to Mexico and to have expanded into the southeastern US. A few older sources, reflected in POWO's map, consider it native to more southeastern states. BONAP and FSUS however are in agreement that it is not native in the US anywhere other than Florida; although most sources including Florida Plant Atlas say it is native to Florida, FSUS marks it as possibly native there, and we adopt their view. We have yet to build the portion of the map in Mexico.
