This species is native to Europe and widely cultivated in gardens; it occasionally escapes and establishes in wild areas, where it can persist for some time but usually does not persist long-term. BONAP reports it as established only in one location in Virginia in the coastal plain, but FSUS marks this as a waif, meaning it did not persist.
