Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is sometimes included in bird seed mixes, which has led to its establishment in new areas, including overseas. It favors disturbed areas and grows readily along roadsides and in open bottomlands; land clearing particularly in bottomlands has likely led to its establishment in the east. We mark all populations as expanded even though a few are isolated, because the distances between isolated populations in its new range follow a similar pattern to those in its native range; it consistently becomes more spotty and uncommon towards the south of its range.
