This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

Habitat

Found on sunny sites in sandy soils, mostly in the coastal plain. Natural habitats include sand dunes, particularly low areas between dunes, bogs, dry open woodlands, barrens, and prairies along rivers. Anthropogenic habitats include roadsides, abandoned fields, and margins of holding ponds.

Mostly found on moist to wet sites, but can occur on dry sites as well. Tolerates significant salinity, explaining its presence in coastal dune habitats as well as along roads. Usually limited to sites where there is relatively little competition from ground-level vegetation. Possibly due to competition and/or requirements for good soil drainage, this species is strictly limited to soils with some sandy material, although there is variation in the portion of sand and its coarseness. It is usually found in more disturbed habitats, but it can sometimes be found in less-disturbed wild habitats where harsh conditions cause high-light conditions to persist long-term.

This species is common in the coastal plain and tends to become uncommon to rare farther inland, particluarly in hilly to mountainous topography. It is also conspicuously absent to rare along most of the Mississippi alluvial plain.

In parts of its range, humans have increased the habitat for this plant, particularly due to its ability to survive along roadsides in sandy soils, and possibly to benefit from road salt, but humans have also destroyed many of its habitats such as by removal of sand dunes and development of grasslands and open woodlands.

Life Cycle

This species is a clumping perennial that reproduces vegetatively through short rhizomes.
