This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is widely planted in gardens and frequently escapes, and has greatly expanded its range as a result. Most of these populations are contiguous with its native range, but a few, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri, are isolated. We still marked the entire new range expanded, in large part because this species is widely planted in gardens in the spaces between these isolated populations. Not only does this provide host populations that insects can use to expand their ranges, but it also makes it likely that gaps in this species' expanded range will fill in over time.
