Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
Although the fruit of this tomatillo relative is edible and sometimes eaten, this species is rarely cultivated; it spreads primarily as a weed in cultivated crops. It has expanded both northwest into California and Nevada, and northeast along the east coast, where it is rare and scattered. We mark both populations expanded because they are adjacent to the native range and seem to be spreading without intentional planting.
