This plant is uncommon to rare in most of its range, but it may be under-reported due to formerly being lumped in with the husk tomato (Physalis pubescens). It has expanded northwest in the eastern portion of its range, but has also been introduced at several sites on the west coast. Like other Physalis, it can grow as a weed in cropland, which likely facilitates its spread and transport to new areas.
