A common annual weed of wheat fields and other agriculture, native to Europe and introduced to North America, where it is common in the northeast in particular, but found in scattered populations across the contintent.

Habitat

In North America, mostly limited to cultivated crop fields and other anthropogenic meadows and fields. Populations are decreasing due to changing agricultural practices, including increased herbicide use and better sorting of seed.

Uses

This species is sometimes cultivated as a garden plant, where it is valued for its showy flowers, although it is illegal to sell in some states because of its role as a weed in commercial agriculture.
