Page contents

Summary

A species of grass native to Eurasia and North Africa and introduced to North America, although there is uncertainty about whether there may be native populations as well. This is also a species that has been genetically engineered, and in which transgenic populations have been documented escaping into the wild.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Habitat

Found in a wide variety of habitats. Prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade. Prefers moist conditions, and tolerant of flooding as well as some drought.

Very tolerant of grazing, often becoming dominant in response to heavy grazing.

Life Cycle

Usually considered a perennial, but able to set seed in one season and occasionally grows as an annual under some conditions. At the northern end of its range, it can rely more heavily on vegetative reproduction, failing to set seed.
