Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is cultivated for hay, but mostly within its native range. It is also widely used in seed mixes for rehabilitating degraded land, including mine spoils, overgrazed pastures, and in watershed restoration projects. As a result of these uses, it has established on some new sites slightly south of its native range from Missouri through Kentucky; we mark these new populations expanded because of proximity to the native range, even though it remains scattered and uncommon in the wild in this region.
