This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species, common in the west of its range, becomes increasingly sporadic and rare eastward. It is sometimes cultivated in gardens, and escapes sometimes form new wild populations; as a result it has been hard to establish exactly where it is native, with different sources reporting different cutoffs. Over time, BONAP has marked it as adventive in a progressively larger portion of the eastern states, as of 2014 considering it adventive anywhere northeast of OK and TX, except for WV. Some sources consider it native to IL, MO, and AR, and nearly all consider it introduced farther east, with the exception of isolated populations in West Virginia. We marked most of the non-native populations Expanded as they are separated from the native range only by small gaps, except for a few populations separated by larger distances.
↑Notes
The common name "western wallflower" can also apply to western wallflower (Erysimum asperum), which has no other widely-used common names, and for that reason we recommend avoiding the use of that name.
