This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is also native to Mexico; we have yet to build this portion of its map.
↑Notes
Although the common name "Texas mountain laurel" is in widespread use, we prefer the common name "Texas mescalbean" because plants of this genus, Dermatophyllum, are commonly referred to as "mescalbean". The name "mountain laurel" is also misleading as this species is not closely related to the true mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia). This common name references the fact that both shrubs are evergreen and have a relatively similar growth habit and form, although past that their resemblances are few.
