Roundleaf Thoroughwort (Eupatorium rotundifolium L.)

Some authorities, including USDA PLANTS and BONAP, lump inland roundleaf eupatorium (Eupatorium pubescens) in with this species, as var. ovatum, and roughleaf eupatorium (Eupatorium scabridum) similarly as var. scabridum. USDA PLANTS also lumps clasping roundleaf eupatorium (Eupatorium cordigerum) in here as var. cordigerum, whereas BONAP treats that separately. We separate all three per the treatment of POWO and FSUS.

Habitat

This species is somewhat of a generalist, found in a variety of disturbed, partly-shaded habitats, including open bottomland woods, bluffs along streams, savannas, and margins of swamps and bogs. Also found in anthropogenic habitats including roadsides, especially roadside ditches, powerline clearances, pastures, abandoned fields, and firebreaks.

Found in a range of moisture conditions from wet to dry. Most likely on sites that experience regular fire or other disturbance.
