Yellow Pond-Lily (Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm.)

Page contents

Notes

The populations of plants formerly thought to belong to the species Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm., in North America, have been broken up and distributed, variously, into several different species of the Nuphar genus: yellow pond-lily (Nuphar advena), great yellow pond-lily (Nuphar polysepala), small yellow pond lily (Nuphar microphylla), intermediate pond-lily (Nuphar ×rubrodisca), arrow-leaved water-lily (Nuphar sagittifolia), and variegated pond-lily (Nuphar variegata).

Although the species N. lutea is still recognized by most authorities, it is now generally agreed-upon that it is not found anywhere in North America, and that the populations formerly thought to belong to that species are better classified as belonging to the various other species above.

We link to the USDA profile for this species, as well as its MOBOT profile, but note that it references outdated information as of the last time we checked it. The ERA data for this species is thus also inaccurate, and we have taken down our map derived from it.

We recommend against purchasing, distributing, and/or planting plants labeled as this species in North America, since it may not be possible to know which population they came from, and they may not be native to your area, or even native anywhere in North America. If you wish to buy, sell, or distribute this plant, we recommend researching it more and using the more updated terminology reflective of the different native populations, and then working with the population(s) are native to your area.
