Maule's Quince (Chaenomeles japonica (Thunb.) Lindl. ex Spach)
Also known as Japanese quince.
POWO treats Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai as a synonym of this species and marks the name as nom. superfl. However, every other source we consulted treats that name as a synonym of flowering quince (Chaenomeles lagenaria) so for now we follow that scheme.

We recommend against using the common name "Japanese quince" even though it matches the scientific name, and this species is native to Japan, because that name also is widely used to refer to flowering quince (Chaenomeles lagenaria), even though that species is not native to Japan.
