European Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.)
Also known as European elderberry, European elder, black elder, elder.
Some authorities, including USDA PLANTS and BONAP, follow the treatment of Bolli (1994) who lumped American black elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) in with this species as ssp. canadensis and blue elderberry (Sambucus cerulea) as ssp. cerulea, often spelled caerulea. We follow the treatment used by POWO and FSUS, which separates them as proper species. When separated, this species is only native to Europe and there are only a few scattered introductions in North America, mostly not persisting in the wild.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
↑Notes
Because of the potential confusion with native species, confounded by the fact that European and American populations were formerly lumped together under the same species, we recommend against using any common names that do not contain the descriptor "European" to refer to this species.
