Blue Elderberry (Sambucus cerulea Raf.)
Also known as blue elder; also classified as Sambucus nigra subsp. cerulea (Raf.) Bolli, Sambucus nigra var. cerulea (Raf.) B.L.Turner.
Some authorities, including USDA PLANTS and BONAP, follow the treatment of Bolli (1994) which treats this taxon as a subspecies of European black elderberry (Sambucus nigra), ssp. cerulea, often spelled caerulea. We follow the convention used by POWO and FSUS which treats this taxon as a separate species.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
