This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
↑Habitat
White goldenrod occurs in a wide range of habitats, usually, but not always on acidic, nutrient-poor soils, on well-drained sites. Natural habitats include rocky upland woods including shale and sandstone barrens, and woodland clearings around rock outcroppings, It also occurs in anthropogenic habitats including pastures and along roadsides, especially on rocky or sandy roadbanks.
White goldenrod tolerates a wide range of soil textures and chemistry, but is usually found on sites where the soil is somehow harsh or difficult, ground-level competition and also keeping the tree canopy more open. It tolerates sandy, clay, and rocky soils, especially those low in organic matter. It usually requires disturbance to establish, especially where topsoil has eroded, exposing mineral soil.
It is often found on slopes, but can occur on flat terrain on well-drained sands.
It tolerates significant salinity, which contributes to its survival along roads, and it occurs in coastal habitats from Long Island northward to the Canadian Maritime Provinces, and sporadically in these habitats slightly farther south. In the north of its range, it ranges into full sun exposures, and in the south of its range it ranges into mesic moisture conditions, but throughout most of its range it prefers dry, partly-shaded sites, usually where there is some shade from a thin or partial tree canopy, but little ground-level competition.
