Southern Sugar Maple (Acer floridanum (Chapm.) Pax)
Also known as Florida maple, hammock maple, sugartree; also classified as Acer saccharum subsp. floridanum (Chapm.) Desmarais, Acer barbatum Michx (Misapplied).
Some authorities treat this as a subspecies of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), subsp. floridanum. Many authors refer to this species by the name Acer barbatum citing the authority of Michaux, but the typified one of Michaux's specimens was demonstrated by Ward (2004) to be regular sugar maple. Because this work was recent, many older synonyms list A. barbatum Michx as a synonym of this species and not sugar maple.
