This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
The exact native range of this species is not known; it is weedy and aggressive and has spread opportunistically in response to human disturbance of the environment. BONAP considers it adventive everywhere in the US, FNA marks it native everywhere, whereas FSUS reports it as native everywhere except NJ and DE, but in the verbal description notes that it is often considered introduced in much of its range. POWO marks it as native to TX, east along the coast to VA, but introduced farther north. We mark Western populations introduced because there is a large gap around the Sonoran desert where this species is generally absent, separating it from its native range. The Eastern populations we mark as Native or Expanded because we do not know the exact extent of the native range, but they are largely contiguous with the native range. We have yet to build the portion of the map in Mexico.
↑Notes
Although this species is sometimes referred to only as "smut grass" or "smutgrass", there are two such species bearing this name, the other being Sporobolus pyramidalis, which is often referred to as Sporobolus jacquemontii. This other species, at least in the Americas, is alternately referred to as both "West Indian dropseed" and "giant smutgrass". Although that species does not occur in the US, the two do overlap in range from Mexico southward. For this reason we recommend using the descriptor "small" when referring to this species.
