Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is native to a fairly restricted region mostly in Virginia and the Carolinas, and uncommon and scattered slightly beyond, but it has been widely used in gardening. A number of populations have established from garden escapes, but they are largely separated from the native range. We marked a few of these populations Expanded due to proximity to the native range, but most of them we have marked as Introduced because of gaps much larger than exists within the native range, and because we see little evidence of expansion from the native range itself. We will update this map if we receive new information.
