Native or Introduced or Not Present

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is agreed-upon to be native to South and Central America, including southern Mexico. USDA Plants reports it as native in the southeastern US, but BONAP reports this entire range as adventive. FSUS reports it as native on the map but notes that some sources consider it adventive, but that some populations are definitely native, and furthermore, might warrant recognition as a distinct taxon, but notes this without proposing or citing such a taxon. We also note that the range in the US is disconnected by a large gap in Mexico over which this species does not occur. For these reasons we mark this species as "Introduced or Native", but we note that there is significant subjectivity in how to classify this species. We have yet to build the portion of the map in Mexico.
