Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This semi-aquatic species has been expanding its range north along the valleys of major rivers, including the Mississippi and Ohio, and there is a small amount of expansion along the east coast. It has also colonized artificial wetlands. Our map marks a broader portion of the range as expanded than BONAP, on the basis of noting a clear pattern that earliest records are restricted from more downstream. Even there, most records are from the 1960's and onward, and this plant may have had a much more restricted range prior to that date, so the true expanded range may be even broader than our map currently shows.
