Northern Barren Strawberry (Waldsteinia fragarioides (Michx.) Tratt.)
Also known as Appalachian barren strawberry; also classified as Geum fragarioides (Michx.) Smedmark.
We follow the scheme of POWO and FSUS which separate the native North American barren strawberries into this species and southern barren strawberry (Waldsteinia doniana). Some authorities, including USDA PLANTS, instead treat both as subspecies of a species with this name. Still others, including BONAP, lump them together as a single species without recognizing any subordinate taxa. Both species are also alternately classified either in the Waldsteinia or Geum genera. We follow POWO's scheme, which is also accepted by FSUS.

The common name "Appalachian barren strawberry" is generally used by sources that lump together this taxon with southern barren strawberry (Waldsteinia doniana), usually under either the name Waldsteinia fragarioides or Geum fragarioides. So these scientific names can refer to either the whole population, or only the northern ones. We thus caution against using that common name to refer to this species, as it is not clear whether it is being used to refer to the whole taxon or just the northern populations. Using the descriptor "northern" not only makes clear what population you are referring to, but that you are following the scheme that separates the two populations, either as species or subspecies.
