This species can be aggressive and weedy, and has expanded greatly in the east, although it is uncommon in much of its new range. Although it has been planted in gardens, it is largely spreading on its own, due to its barbed seeds that stick to clothing or animal fur. We marked the Colorado population as introduced due to its geographic isolation.
