Spongy-Leaved Arrowhead (Sagittaria spongiosa (Engelm.) Werier)

Also classified as Sagittaria spatulata (J.G.Sm.) Buchenau, Sagittaria spathulata (Alternate Spelling), Sagittaria calycina var. spongiosa Engelm., Sagittaria montevidensis subsp. spongiosa (Engelm.) Bogin.

This taxon is treated inconsistently by different authorities. BONAP treats it as its own species but refers to it as Sagittaria spatulata (J.G.Sm.) Buchenau. We follow POWO's treatment, which also considers it its own species. USDA PLANTS lumps it in with hooded arrowhead (Sagittaria calycina) as var. spongiosa, whereas Go Botany lumps it in with giant arrowhead (Sagittaria montevidensis) as ssp. spongiosa (Engelm.) Bogin.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is absent from most of the southerly portions of the L3 ecoregions on our map; its southernmost population is in North Carolina. This species is native to Canada but we have yet to build the portion of its map in Canada.
