This species is a widespread, naturally-occurring hybrid of narrowleaf cottonwood (Populus angustifolia) and eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides).

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
Our map is complete into Canada but this species is also native to Mexico and we have yet to build that portion of its map. We found one 1982 record in Idaho farther north than reported by BONAP, which reports it only in the southern portions of the state, but BONAP did not report it as a false record. POWO does not report this species as occurring anywhere in Idaho, however.
