This photo shows the evergreen basal foliage of a white avens plant; it looks a little beaten up from the weather. This plant here is sheltered from the winter by some leaf-litter.

Also poking up through the leaves is another native evergreen or semi-evergreen plant: golden ragwort (Packera aurea).
