Northern Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica (Mirb.) Kartesz)

Also classified as Myrica pensylvanica Mirb.

The taxonomy of the Myricaceae is disputed. This species was originally described as Myrica pensylvanica but Wilbur (1994) proposed a number of changes, which included moving this into the Morella genus. Many authorities accepted the genus move, but rejected Wilbur's merge of this species into southern bayberry (Morella caroliniensis). We follow this scheme of accepting the move into that genus but rejecting the merge, which more-or-less corresponds to the treatment of FSUS and BONAP. We note that POWO, along with a number of other authorities, still treats this species as belonging to the Myrica genus.
