This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
↑Notes
We prefer the name "awnless brome" because it is unambiguous, descriptive (this species often has no awns, and when it does have awns they are much shorter than most bromes), and also is a loose non-translation of the scientific epithet inermis, which more literally translates as "unarmed", but refers similarly to the lack of awns. We recommend against the use of the common name "smooth brome"; although it more frequently refers to this species, it also is used to refer to bald brome (Bromus racemosus). Similarly, the common names which use terms "Austrian", "Hungarian", and "Russian", although accurate in a loose sense because this species is native to all three countries, are a bit limited because they only reference part of this species' relatively broad native range, and say nothing else about it.
