We recommend against the use of the common name "purple milkwort". Although that name more frequently refers to this species, it is also sometimes used to refer to racemed milkwort (Senega polygama), which also has purple flowers. The names "field milkwort" and "blood milkwort" are both unambiguous, with "field milkwort" accurately referencing this species' habitat, and "blood milkwort" referencing its scientific name.
