A perennial plant a goldenrod-like characteristics, but a flat-topped inflorescence and more slender, grass-like leaves, hence the common name "grass-leaved goldenrod".

There are several Euthamia species in North America, but this one has the widest distribution and is the only species in most of its range.
Euthamia are closely related to solidago and have sometimes been classified in this genus. There are far more solidago species in North America, numerous of them overlapping with this species in range.
