This species is widely cultivated in gardens and also used in ecological restoration projects, often outside its native range. It is also fairly weedy, spreading aggressively on its own, and it thrives along roadsides and railroads. As a result it has established across the continent. In the east, new populations are expansive and contiguous with its native range. We treat western populations as introduced because they are separated from its eastern range somewhat, but they could perhaps be considered expanded as well.
