Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is native and ubiquitous in the arid west, and is thought to have expanded eastward in response to humans clearing land and creating the sorts of barren, open habitats it favors. In the east, it is still uncommon and spotty in most of its range.
