This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
↑Habitat
Prefers part sun to medium shade; considerably more shade-tolerant than most asters, but less so than Eurybia divaricata and particularly less likely to flower in shade.
Dry, open woods in most of its range. Found on slightly richer and moister sites in a few regions.
↑Life Cycle
In more shaded conditions, persists as large, vegetative colonies but requires higher light conditions to flower. Even on brighter sites, as the plant spreads vegetatively, new plants typically grows only basal leaves that persist through a full season before growing flowering stems the following year.
↑Uses
Uncommonly cultivated as a garden plant, which probably represents a missed opportunity because this plant is easy to grow in gardens and has interesting foliage and fairly showy flowers. It makes an excellent groundcover.
