Habitat

Prefers well-drained soils and part shade, but can tolerate full sun with sufficient moisture.

Found in dry, open woods, savannahs, and shaded roadsides, often in natural areas subject to some fire. Also found on somewhat moister sites in the southern parts of its range.

Uses

Rarely planted in gardens, where it is valued for its showy flowers.
