↑Control
This species can be invasive in the eastern US, but is not yet widely-established in most regions. The most important aspect of control is prevention, avoiding the sale, purchase, and/or planting of this species in North America. Good alternatives include the visually-similar southern arrowwood (Viburnum recognitum) and smooth arrowwood (Viburnum recognitum), both of which are native.
Controlling this species can be difficult when there are still source populations in landscaping. Once source populations have been eliminated, it is easier to control, as it reproduces slowly, although control can be labor intensive in areas where there is a high density of seedlings, and control requires follow-up since this species, like most viburnums, has seeds that can persist in the seed bank for as long as 10 years. Control also requires knowledge and skill, as seedlings can be confused with native viburnums.
Seedlings and other smaller individuals can be uprooted, which is usually easiest to do after a period of rain when the soil is moist.
Larger individuals can be cut to the ground and then sprayed with herbicide to prevent resprouting. Alternatively, repeated cutting can kill shrubs that resprout, especially if they also face competition from other plants that fill in in response to cutting them to the ground. In some circumstances, larger individuals may be able to be uprooted with the help of tools.
Control is much easier on sites where there is more competition from native shrubs.
