Southeastern Wildrye (Elymus glabriflorus (Vasey ex L.H. Dewey) Scribn. & C.R. Ball)

POWO has merged this species into Virginia wildrye (Elymus virginicus) for grounds we are not aware of; we reject this merge and treat them separately, in agreement with BONAP, FNA, and Biosystematics of Triticeae (2022)

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

There are numerous other Elymus species in North America that overlap with this one in range; nearly all are native, except for quackgrass (Elymus repens) which is introduced and invasive; these species only overlap in the north of this species' range.

Among Elymus, southeastern wildrye is most closely related to early wildrye (Elymus macgregorii) and Virginia wildrye (Elymus virginicus), and is able to hybridize and intergrade with both. Hybrids with E. macgregorii are limited by the mostly non-overlapping bloom periods, whereas the bloom period overlaps more with E. virginicus.
