Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is native to Mexico and areas farther south; it has widely expanded its range northward due to its ability to thrive in lawns, gardens, and landscaping, including areas that are mowed regularly and areas that are mulched. It often spreads when soil and mulch are moved, and through the nursery trade when its seeds are mixed in with potted plants. Although humans have aided this plant's spread, we mark it expanded because its new range is largely connected and contiguous with the native range. We have not yet completed the portion of this plant's range map in Mexico, and we have had difficulty establishing exactly where its native range limits lie.
