A grass native to a wide range across North America and Europe, common in the more northerly part of its range as well as in Western North America, but scattered and undcommon across much of its range.

↑Habitat
Prefers part shade to sun and wet conditions. Tolerates sandy soils.
Prefers anthropogenic habitats in parts of its range, intact natural areas in others.
Found on shores of ponds, edges of bogs, marshes, and swamps, and in ditchs and wet depressions.
