This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.
↑Notes
The reported range of this species on BONAP is extends less far west than the reported range from USDA; BONAP considers much of the USDA's reports of western portion of the range to consist of false reports. On the other hand, POWO does not recognize this as a proper species or even variety or subspecies, instead lumping it in with American black nightshade (Solanum americanum), along with other taxa distinguished by USDA and BONAP.
In general, the black-fruiting Solanum, in the "Solanum Section" of the genus, are both hard to distinguish from each other, but subject to a great deal of taxonomic disputes.
Here we have gone with BONAP's classification scheme and based our range map on theirs.
