American Black Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis L.)

Also known as canada elderberry, common elderberry; also classified as Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli, Sambucus nigra var. canadensis (L.) B.L.Turner.

Many authorities, including BONAP and USDA PLANTS, following the treatment of Bolli (1994), view this taxon as either a subspecies or variety of the European black elderberry (Sambucus nigra). We follow the treatment of FNA and FSUS, treating this as a separate species.

This tentative map is based on our own research. It may have limited data on Canada and/or Mexico, and there is some subjectivity in our assignment of plants as introduced vs. expanded. Read more in this blog post.

Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

This species is also native to Canada and Mexico; we have yet to build these portions of its map.
