Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.
This species is widely planted in gardens, and reproduces readily by seed. It thrives in poor soil where there is little competition from other plants, and can establish along railroads, roadsides, and in abandoned fields. The combination of widespread planting and creation of suitable habitat has led this species to establish far outside its range. We mark some of the new populations expanded where they are adjacent to the native range, but some of the isolated populations we mark introduced. Some of these choices represented a subjective judgment call, and we may update our map if we see evidence that the range is filling in.
