This species has expanded to fill parts of a large gap in its native range roughly between Illinois and Pennsylvania; it is likely taking advantage of new habitat created by humans, growing in sandy soils along roadsides and railroads, and pits dug during construction. However it is rare to uncommon in this new range, as in the northern parts of its native range.
