Also known as Sweet pignut hickory, small-fruited hickory; also classified as Carya glabra var. odorata (Marshall) Little.

BONAP and POWO consider this a variety of pignut hickory (Carya glabra), var. odorata. We have not yet examined this merge; for now we keep it separate in keeping with the USDA and FSUS treatments.

This map is based on our research. We have checked its accuracy to Level 3 ecoregions. Although this plant occurs somewhere in each of these regions, it may only occur in a small part of some or all of them.

POWO reports a narrower range for this variety than the USDA does for this species; in particular POWO omits LA, AR, OK, IN, OH, PA, MD, NJ, DE, and all areas northeast, from the reported range. We have not yet examined or reconciled these discrepancies. For now, our map is based on the USDA map.
